Whisky Market Size in MENA

The MENA's whisky market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +13.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, whisky production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, overseas shipments of whisky decreased by -3.9% to X litres, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whisky exports declined to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key exporting country with an export of about X litres, which accounted for 63% of total exports. Turkey (X litres) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Jordan (12%). Tunisia (X litres), Lebanon (X litres), Israel (X litres) and Morocco (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to whisky exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -5.5%. At the same time, Turkey (+96.3%), Israel (+65.0%), Morocco (+51.6%), Tunisia (+10.2%) and Lebanon (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +96.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Jordan (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+26 p.p.), Turkey (+13 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.5 p.p.), Israel (+2.6 p.p.), Lebanon (+2.1 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Jordan (-50 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest whisky supplier in MENA, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jordan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 11% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, whisky exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (-3.9% per year) and Tunisia (+9.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 83% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per litre), while Turkey ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+26.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were imported in MENA; stabilizing at the previous year. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whisky imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the main importing country with an import of around X litres, which reached 41% of total imports. Turkey (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Israel (X litres). All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total imports. Oman (X litres), Iraq (X litres), Morocco (X litres), Lebanon (X litres), Qatar (X litres) and Bahrain (X litres) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +25.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 75% of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +23.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per litre, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 6.9%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per litre), while Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
