In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the MENA's flax fabric market, when its value decreased by -27.5% to $X. Overall, consumption enjoyed significant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, flax fabric production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production faced a deep downturn. Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), mixing up a 6.1% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven fabrics of flax exports, with a CAGR of +123.0% from 2015 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+22.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey (+90 p.p.) and Tunisia (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest flax fabric supplier in MENA, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +18.7%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per kg in 2022, with a decrease of -60.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 4.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per kg in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per kg), while Turkey stood at $X per kg.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-18.5%).

Flax Fabric Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of flax increased by 91% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28,457% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, flax fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 58% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 32% share, followed by Tunisia (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +93.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 92% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per kg, shrinking by -22.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 276% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per kg), while Turkey ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
