From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Turkey stood at +2.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (-0.2% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (-5.3% per year).

The average artichoke yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of artichokes in the Middle East was estimated at X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 9.2%. In 2022, overseas shipments of artichokes decreased by -24.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 108%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Lebanon was the major exporter of artichokes in the Middle East, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons). All these countries together took near 43% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Palestine (with a CAGR of +40.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) remains the largest artichoke supplier in the Middle East, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 7.7% share.

In Lebanon, artichoke exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+7.6% per year) and Jordan (+25.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, artichoke imports in the Middle East dropped dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -21% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Lebanon (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to artichoke imports into Turkey stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+18.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.1%) and Kuwait (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest artichoke importing markets in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
