The Middle Eastern artificial and colloidal graphite market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +21.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 39%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas shipments of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 224% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 53% of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Turkey (8.5%), Saudi Arabia (7.9%) and Bahrain (6.3%). Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +38.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+121.3%), Bahrain (+35.6%), Iran (+12.8%), Turkey (+8.5%) and Saudi Arabia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +121.3% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates (+35 p.p.), Kuwait (+20 p.p.) and Bahrain (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -4.6%, -17.3% and -23.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplying countries in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Bahrain ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +61.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -10.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 36%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations imported in the Middle East rose markedly to X tons, growing by 9.6% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 54% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (11%) and Iran (9.1%). The following importers - Bahrain (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 8.8% of total imports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations imports, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+13.1%), Kuwait (+8.4%), Bahrain (+4.0%), Oman (+3.6%) and Iran (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+32 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+8.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Iran (-1.9 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (-30.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in the Middle East, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +10.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+8.3% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-22.2% per year).
