The Middle Eastern artificial staple fibre market dropped dramatically to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -18.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 92%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 83%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of artificial staple fibres, committing 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to artificial staple fibre exports from Turkey stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+39.0%), Iran (+15.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +39.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates increased by +8.1, +3.3 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +29.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, artificial staple fibre export price increased by +66.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, supplies from abroad of artificial staple fibres increased by 83% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 202% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 74%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 46% of total imports. Iraq (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Iran (13%) and Yemen (10%). Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +78.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial staple fibres in the Middle East, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-3.6% per year) and Iraq (+16.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
