Asbestos Market Size in the Middle East

After nine years of decline, the Middle Eastern asbestos market increased by 5.2% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a abrupt descent. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 1,037% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the largest exporter of asbestoses in the Middle East, generating 100% of total export.

Syrian Arab Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asbestoses exports, with a CAGR of -13.5% from 2012 to 2022. Syrian Arab Republic (+89 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) also remains the largest asbestos supplier in the Middle East.

In 2022, after nine years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of asbestoses, when their volume increased by 6.2% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a dramatic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asbestos imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a dramatic descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Iran represented the largest importer of asbestoses in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Lebanon (13%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asbestos imports into Iran stood at -35.9%. The United Arab Emirates (-7.9%) and Lebanon (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+21 p.p.) and Lebanon (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -33.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Iran ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asbestoses in the Middle East, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Iran amounted to -26.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-6.3% per year) and Lebanon (-4.4% per year).

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
