Asparagus Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern asparagus market contracted to $X in 2022, reducing by -3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Asparagus Production in the Middle East

In value terms, asparagus production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Iran (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in the Middle East, accounting for 94% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Iran, asparagus production increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average asparagus yield in the Middle East totaled X tons per ha, surging by 1.6% against 2021. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of asparagus were harvested in the Middle East; waning by -2.7% on the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of asparagus exported in the Middle East dropped markedly to X tons, which is down by -23.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 139%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 354% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 49% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Palestine (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +72.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +11.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+21.8% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+33.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -13.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asparagus export price increased by +64.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

Asparagus imports fell to X tons in 2022, waning by -6.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major importer of asparagus in the Middle East, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2022. Qatar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Turkey (7.8%) and Kuwait (7.6%). Bahrain (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Qatar (+62.0%), Oman (+37.5%), Turkey (+7.1%), Jordan (+6.9%), Bahrain (+6.1%) and Kuwait (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +62.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Qatar (+15 p.p.) and Oman (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in the Middle East, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +7.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+66.8% per year) and Kuwait (+10.8% per year).

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 23%.
