Avocado Market Size in the Middle East

In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in the Middle Eastern avocado market, when its value decreased by -16.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Avocado Production in the Middle East

In value terms, avocado production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 94%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Israel (X tons) remains the largest avocado producing country in the Middle East, accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Lebanon (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Israel totaled +7.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lebanon (+8.9% per year) and Saudi Arabia (0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of avocados in the Middle East totaled X tons per ha, increasing by 8.4% compared with the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The avocado harvested area declined to X ha in 2022, waning by -7.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of avocados exported in the Middle East soared to X tons, jumping by 53% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, avocado exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Israel was the key exporter of avocados in the Middle East, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 73% of total exports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkey (X tons). All these countries together took near 23% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to avocado exports from Israel stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Turkey (+94.5%), Lebanon (+21.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +94.5% from 2012-2022. Lebanon (+12 p.p.), Turkey (+8.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel saw its share reduced by -23.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest avocado supplier in the Middle East, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Israel stood at +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+110.5% per year) and Lebanon (+22.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, avocado export price decreased by -17.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, approx. X tons of avocados were imported in the Middle East; waning by -25.4% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 126%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 117%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 47% of total imports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Palestine (10%) and Qatar (7.8%). Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to avocado imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +34.9%. At the same time, Turkey (+39.8%), Qatar (+24.2%), Bahrain (+19.1%), Oman (+15.7%), Palestine (+13.6%) and Kuwait (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +39.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+39 p.p.), Turkey (+15 p.p.) and Qatar (+4.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kuwait (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported avocados in the Middle East, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Palestine ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with an 11% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, avocado imports increased at an average annual rate of +33.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Palestine (+16.1% per year) and Qatar (+35.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
