In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the Middle Eastern bacon and ham market, when its value decreased by -2.7% to $X. Overall, consumption enjoyed a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in shipments abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat, which increased by 1.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Turkey dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), comprising a 7.6% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) and Israel (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +95.6% from 2012 to 2022. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Lebanon (-3.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (-15.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey increased by +86 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, purchases abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, bacon and ham imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2022. Iraq (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 5% share, followed by Turkey (4.8%). The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+36.0%), Qatar (+11.6%) and Turkey (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+7.2 p.p.), Iraq (+4.6 p.p.) and Qatar (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat in the Middle East, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iraq ($X), with a 3.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3% share.
