In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Middle Eastern banana and plantain market, when its value decreased by -24.7% to $X. In Turkey, banana and plantain production increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (0.0% per year) and Israel (+1.8% per year).

The average banana and plantain yield expanded remarkably to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 15% compared with 2021. The yield indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain yield increased by +55.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 28%. The level of yield peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of bananas and plantains production in the Middle East reduced slightly to X ha, stabilizing at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 534%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Yemen (X tons), distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented the largest exporters of bananas and plantains, together achieving 94% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +85.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Yemen ($X), Israel ($X) and Lebanon ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 81% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +51.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 35% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain export price increased by +50.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas and plantains decreased by -62.8% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after six years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Iran represented the main importer of bananas and plantains in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 32% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Palestine (X tons), together mixing up a 55% share of total imports.

Imports into Iran increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+15.3%), Palestine (+9.0%), Qatar (+4.8%) and Oman (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-11.7%) and Turkey (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Palestine and Oman increased by +23, +11, +5.1, +4.4 and +4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Iran ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Turkey, Iraq, Palestine and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
