Barbed Wire Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern barbed wire market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas shipments of barbed wire and entanglements increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, barbed wire exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the major exporter of barbed wire and entanglements, constituting 70% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (5.2%). The following exporters - Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+48.6%) and Saudi Arabia (+33.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +48.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-4.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+31 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+16 p.p.) and Oman (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -43.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest barbed wire supplier in the Middle East, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +8.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+29.5% per year) and Israel (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of barbed wire and entanglements, when their volume decreased by -44.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 146%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barbed wire imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2021. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Oman (8.6%) and Kuwait (6.1%). Palestine (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Palestine (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iraq ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by Oman, Kuwait, Palestine and Yemen, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Palestine, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, barbed wire import price increased by +171.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
