Bottled Water Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern bottled water market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. After three years of decline, overseas shipments of bottled waters increased by 1.3% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -28.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water exports totaled $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporter of bottled waters in the Middle East, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (6.3%). Lebanon (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Palestine (+20.9%), Saudi Arabia (+19.7%) and Oman (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.9%) and Lebanon (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+19 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -3.5% and -9.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in the Middle East, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Palestine, with a 3.9% share.

In Turkey, bottled water exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (-2.5% per year) and Palestine (+20.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of bottled waters increased by 5.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented roughly 67% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (7.2%) and Palestine (5%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +12.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
