Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Syrian Arab Republic was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together committing a 39% share of total exports. Palestine (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Oman (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to broad bean and horse bean exports from Syrian Arab Republic stood at +36.6%. At the same time, Oman (+68.5%), Saudi Arabia (+43.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+17.2%), Palestine (+7.1%) and Turkey (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +68.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +59.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of broad beans and horse beans (dry) decreased by -40.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2022. Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kuwait (-2.5%) and Yemen (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Lebanon, Bahrain and Jordan increased by +29, +5.4, +3.6, +3.2 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported broad beans and horse beans (dry) in the Middle East, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 10% share.
