The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, calcareous building stone exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The shipments of the three major exporters of calcareous building stone, namely Iran, Iraq and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

Calcareous building stone imports reduced notably to X tons in 2021, dropping by -86.3% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 999% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, calcareous building stone imports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. Imports into Qatar increased at an average annual rate of +83.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+87.2%), Lebanon (+20.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.5%) and Jordan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +87.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Qatar (+73 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-3 p.p.) and Jordan (-53.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Jordan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcareous building stone in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.7% share.

In Jordan, calcareous building stone imports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+0.9% per year) and Turkey (+62.3% per year).
