Exports in the Middle East
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of calcareous building stone, when their volume increased by 17% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcareous building stone exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 108%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of calcareous building stone, namely Iran, Iraq and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), making up a 13% share of total exports. Palestine (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +111.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest calcareous building stone supplying countries in the Middle East were Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together comprising 88% of total exports. Palestine and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.7%.
Among the main exporting countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +79.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+18.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Calcareous Building Stone Imports
Imports in the Middle East
Calcareous building stone imports reduced notably to X tons in 2021, dropping by -86.3% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 999% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, calcareous building stone imports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 191% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Qatar represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), mixing up a 15% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Qatar increased at an average annual rate of +83.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+87.2%), Lebanon (+20.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.5%) and Jordan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +87.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Qatar (+73 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-3 p.p.) and Jordan (-53.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Jordan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcareous building stone in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.7% share.
In Jordan, calcareous building stone imports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+0.9% per year) and Turkey (+62.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 395% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
