In Turkey, canary seed production expanded at an average annual rate of +40.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average canary seed yield surged to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 402%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the canary seed yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of canary seed in the Middle East contracted rapidly to X ha, declining by -21.2% against 2021. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 84%. Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, overseas shipments of canary seed increased by 214% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 754% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, canary seed exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 892%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the key exporter of canary seed, making up 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to canary seed exports from Turkey stood at +27.5%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+37.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+9.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+9.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey stood at $X per ton.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, imports of canary seed in the Middle East contracted to X tons, falling by -11.8% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canary seed imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 30% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (11%), Bahrain (10%), Iran (7.4%), Oman (6.6%), Syrian Arab Republic (5.9%) and Jordan (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to canary seed imports into Turkey stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Oman (+32.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.8%), Saudi Arabia (+8.0%) and Bahrain (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-3.2%), Syrian Arab Republic (-4.6%) and Jordan (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Oman (+6.1 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+6 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.7 p.p.) and Turkey (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Iran (-4.7 p.p.), Jordan (-5.2 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +24.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
