The Middle Eastern market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums shrank notably to $X in 2022, falling by -35.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of wood boxes, crates and cable drums, when their volume increased by 70% to X units. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 88%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Bahrain represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units), together committing a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood box and cable drum exports from Bahrain stood at +6.7%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkey (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates increased by +19 and +4.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Bahrain ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -22.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 51%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per unit), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, overseas purchases of wood boxes, crates and cable drums increased by 17% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X units) represented the major importer of wood boxes, crates and cable drums, creating 30% of total imports. Kuwait (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Jordan (13%), Oman (10%), Israel (10%), Qatar (7.3%), Bahrain (7%) and Turkey (5.1%).

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood boxes, crates and cable drums imports, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+2.5%) and Oman (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-1.1%), Bahrain (-2.3%), Qatar (-4.3%) and Jordan (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Oman increased by +19, +3.1 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 38% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +7.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum import price decreased by -0.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
