Cassava Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern cassava market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cassava Production in the Middle East

In value terms, cassava production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Jordan (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Yemen (X tons), with a combined 87% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cassava Exports

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cassava, when their volume decreased by -22.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 111%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of cassava, namely the United Arab Emirates, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cassava exports, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. The United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest cassava supplier in the Middle East.

In the United Arab Emirates, cassava exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

Cassava Imports

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of cassava imported in the Middle East dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -9.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 977% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cassava imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 235% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the main importer of cassava in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Qatar (+22.4%), Oman (+6.3%) and Bahrain (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar increased by +10 and +7.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 14% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, cassava imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (+9.0% per year) and Qatar (+25.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 193% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
