In 2021, shipments abroad of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) increased by 206% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 332% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 621% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), achieving a 9.2% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +39.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+40.7%) and Lebanon (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and the United Arab Emirates increased by +54 and +5.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest non-wheat cereal pellets supplier in the Middle East, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
In Turkey, non-wheat cereal pellets exports expanded at an average annual rate of +32.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+42.8% per year) and Lebanon (+17.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 67%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, purchases abroad of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) increased by 2.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 51% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (9.8%), Iraq (8.4%) and Yemen (4.8%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+20.8%), Kuwait (+10.3%) and Yemen (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bahrain (-14.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (-26.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+47 p.p.), Kuwait (+8.7 p.p.), Iraq (+8 p.p.) and Yemen (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -67.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in the Middle East, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +7.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kuwait (+27.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-23.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+15.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
