Other Cereals Market Size in the Middle East
In 2021, the Middle Eastern other cereals market decreased by -6.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Other Cereals Production in the Middle East
In value terms, other cereals production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of other cereals production, comprising approx. 98% of total volume.
In Turkey, other cereals production increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
In 2021, the average other cereals yield in the Middle East shrank slightly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the harvested area of other cerealses in the Middle East declined to X ha, falling by -3.3% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Other Cereals Exports
Exports in the Middle East
In 2021, other cereals exports in the Middle East shrank remarkably to X tons, dropping by -20.8% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 208% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, other cereals exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 68%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons) represented the largest exporters of other cerealses in the Middle East, together amounting to approx. 69% of total exports. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Palestine (10%) and Turkey (6%). The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Turkey (with a CAGR of +97.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest other cereals supplying countries in the Middle East were Palestine ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 82% of total exports. These countries were followed by Iran, Turkey, Oman and Yemen, which together accounted for a further 16%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +95.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Other Cereals Imports
Imports in the Middle East
Other cereals imports fell sharply to X tons in 2021, declining by -28.4% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, other cereals imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Yemen represented the key importer of other cerealses in the Middle East, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Israel (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together committing a 45% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Yemen was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses imports, with a CAGR of +90.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+69.4%), the United Arab Emirates (+19.0%), Kuwait (+11.3%) and Israel (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Palestine (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Yemen (+46 p.p.), Oman (+15 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.9 p.p.), Israel (+2.5 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Palestine (-58.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Palestine ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cerealses in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Palestine stood at -3.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+7.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+22.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 244%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+17.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
