Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pimenta pepper production, comprising approx. 57% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iran (X tons), with a 14% share.
In Turkey, pimenta pepper production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Saudi Arabia (0.0% per year) and Iran (+0.7% per year).
The average pimenta pepper yield skyrocketed to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 22% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of pimenta pepper were harvested in the Middle East; approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 1.2%. After three years of growth, overseas shipments of pimenta pepper decreased by -4.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 121%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 97%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the main exporters of pimenta pepper in the Middle East, together mixing up 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together constituting a 21% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +107.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and Jordan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 89% of total exports.
Israel, with a CAGR of +111.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+18.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pimenta Pepper Imports
Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, supplies from abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -22.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -27.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the key importer of pimenta pepper, comprising 39% of total imports. Israel (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (11%), Qatar (6.8%) and Oman (6%). The following importers - Iran (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.1% share of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pimenta pepper. At the same time, Iraq (+22.3%), Israel (+10.1%), Qatar (+7.2%) and Turkey (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-4.0%) and Iran (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Israel (+9.7 p.p.), Turkey (+4.2 p.p.), Iraq (+3.3 p.p.) and Qatar (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Iran (-3.4 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (-3.6 p.p.) and Oman (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman, Iran and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +52.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
