The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of chilies and peppers (green) were harvested in the Middle East; standing approx. at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the chili and pepper harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, approx. X tons of chilies and peppers (green) were exported in the Middle East; shrinking by -20.5% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together mixing up a 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Oman (-3.4%), Syrian Arab Republic (-7.4%) and Israel (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+36 p.p.) and Iran (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Syrian Arab Republic and Israel saw its share reduced by -2.2% and -39.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest chili and pepper supplier in the Middle East, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with an 8.9% share.

In Turkey, chili and pepper exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (-11.0% per year) and Jordan (-2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the fifth year in a row, the Middle East recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chilies and peppers (green), which increased by 1.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2022. Kuwait (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Qatar (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 26% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iraq ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports. Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
