The Middle Eastern cigarettes containing tobacco market declined significantly to $X in 2022, reducing by -32% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco production shrank sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a prominent increase. Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, shipments abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco increased by 0.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +5.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of cigarettes containing tobacco, making up 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together making up a 36% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+6.7%) and Oman (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +6.7% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates (+9.1 p.p.) and Oman (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplying countries in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Oman ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Oman, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 62%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of cigarettes containing tobacco increased by 1.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Iraq (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Israel (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) were the major importers of cigarettes containing tobacco, together generating 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
