After three years of growth, shipments abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -38.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 206%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 268% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, comprising 68% of total exports. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkey (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Jordan (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Israel (-5.6%) and Turkey (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+66 p.p.) and Jordan (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey and Israel saw its share reduced by -12.8% and -49.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier in the Middle East, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +40.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (-4.2% per year) and Turkey (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 79%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+16.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres imported in the Middle East declined to X tons, reducing by -13.5% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major importer of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in the Middle East, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 43% of total imports in 2022. Iran (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Qatar (12%), Saudi Arabia (11%) and Israel (8.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iran ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports. Israel and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Israel, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
