In 2021, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -2.2% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 71% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Jordan (5.7%) and Yemen (4.8%). The following exporters - Israel (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract supplying countries in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Jordan ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +40.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -7.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 52% share of total imports. Israel, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +16.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 2.8%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
