Green Coffee Market Size in the Middle East

For the sixth consecutive year, the Middle Eastern green coffee market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.5% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +80.8% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Green Coffee Production in the Middle East

In value terms, green coffee production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 31%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Yemen (X tons) remains the largest green coffee producing country in the Middle East, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Yemen was relatively modest.

In 2022, the average yield of coffee (green) in the Middle East reduced modestly to X kg per ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the green coffee yield reached the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The green coffee harvested area rose slightly to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, overseas shipments of coffee (green) increased by 1.1% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +61.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, green coffee exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 44% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (10%), Yemen (8.6%) and Jordan (7%). Palestine (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coffee (green) exports, with a CAGR of +71.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Palestine (+62.4%), Kuwait (+18.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+11.9%) and Saudi Arabia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Yemen (-11.2%) and Jordan (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+44 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.) and Palestine (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Jordan and Yemen saw its share reduced by -29.1% and -31.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest green coffee supplier in the Middle East, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 15% share.

In Turkey, green coffee exports expanded at an average annual rate of +60.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Yemen (-4.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of coffee (green), when their volume decreased by -3.8% to X tons. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.3% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importers of coffee (green) in 2022, accounting for near 29% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Jordan (X tons). All these countries together took near 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +14.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
