After four years of growth, the Middle Eastern composite paperboard market decreased by -6.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Composite paperboard exports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 58% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporter of composite paper and paperboard in the Middle East, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 46% of total exports in 2021. Lebanon (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +75.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest composite paperboard supplier in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +16.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+71.9% per year) and Lebanon (+6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 29% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of composite paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 3.3% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 43% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took near 47% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard imports into Turkey stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+17.3%), Kuwait (+15.1%), Saudi Arabia (+13.7%) and Oman (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-5.5%) and the United Arab Emirates (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+9 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+5.6 p.p.), Turkey (+5.2 p.p.) and Kuwait (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-7.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-14.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported composite paper and paperboard in the Middle East, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 9.3% share.

In Turkey, composite paperboard imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+9.1% per year) and Israel (-4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
