The Middle Eastern composition leather market reached $X in 2021, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Exports in the Middle East
In 2021, overseas shipments of composition leather increased by 1.9% to X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, composition leather exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. Syrian Arab Republic (X square meters), Palestine (X square meters) and Iran (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of composition leather. At the same time, Palestine (+33.5%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Iran (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Palestine increased by +12 and +2.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest composition leather supplier in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Palestine ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled -5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Palestine (+45.2% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+31.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per square meter, reducing by -14.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per square meter), while Turkey ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+23.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, approx. X square meters of composition leather were imported in the Middle East; rising by 59% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composition leather imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 66%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X square meters) was the key importer of composition leather, generating 58% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Yemen (X square meters) and Iran (X square meters). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports.
Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of composition leather. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+43.2%), Yemen (+35.3%) and Iran (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +43.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+25 p.p.), Yemen (+5.8 p.p.), Iran (+3.6 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported composition leather in the Middle East, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+49.4% per year) and Iran (+4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per square meter in 2021, with a decrease of -15.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter), while Yemen ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
