The biggest shipments were from Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together reaching 85% of total export. The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of raw steel and steel semi-finished products increased by 52% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 182%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
