Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Lebanon dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in the Middle East, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Lebanon amounted to +60.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+1.4% per year) and Oman (+15.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 17%. In 2021, imports of currants and gooseberries in the Middle East soared to X tons, with an increase of 138% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 86%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Among the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +39.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -35.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year.
