In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Middle Eastern dried or smoked fish market, when its value increased by 2.8% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Production of Dried Or Smoked Fish in the Middle East
In value terms, dried or smoked fish production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of dried or smoked fish decreased by -12.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 107%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 72% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Oman (5.2%). Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+26.7%) and Oman (+22.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The United Arab Emirates (+19 p.p.), Oman (+3.9 p.p.) and Iran (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -10% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Oman ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 90% of total exports. Iran lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.5%.
Iran, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 36%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Dried Or Smoked Fish
Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, supplies from abroad of dried or smoked fish was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Israel was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 44% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Jordan (X tons). All these countries together took near 44% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Israel was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried or smoked fish imports, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahrain (+4.7%) and Kuwait (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Jordan (-3.1%), Oman (-8.7%), Qatar (-8.8%) and the United Arab Emirates (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Israel (+29 p.p.), Kuwait (+5.7 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Qatar (-1.7 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-22.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried or smoked fish in the Middle East, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 7.5% share.
In Israel, dried or smoked fish imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-12.0% per year) and Kuwait (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dried or smoked fish import price decreased by -11.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
