Dry Bean Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern dry bean market was estimated at $X in 2022, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Dry Bean Production in the Middle East

In value terms, dry bean production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 18%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Yemen (X tons), with a combined 97% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

In 2022, the average dry bean yield in the Middle East contracted slightly to X tons per ha, which is down by -2.1% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 7.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of beans (dry) exported in the Middle East dropped rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -28.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 238%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, dry bean exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beans (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +53.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Turkey (+75 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-40.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest dry bean supplier in the Middle East, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Turkey, dry bean exports increased at an average annual rate of +46.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of beans (dry) imported in the Middle East fell to X tons, which is down by -13.8% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry bean imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of dry bean imports in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together resulting at 81% of total import. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), comprising a 5.3% share of total imports. Israel (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Iraq ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
