Envelope Market Size in the Middle East

After two years of decline, the Middle Eastern envelope market increased by 18% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of envelopes were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, envelope exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the main exporter of envelopes in the Middle East, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), comprising a 28% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest envelope supplier in the Middle East, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (-4.8% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of envelopes imported in the Middle East soared to X tons, increasing by 20% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The following importers - Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Oman (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +46.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest envelope importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon and Yemen, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +37.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
