In 2022, the Middle Eastern exercise book market increased by 34% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of exercise books, when their volume increased by 3.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 202%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exercise book exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 243%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Palestine represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 57% of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total exports. Oman (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to exercise book exports from Palestine stood at +23.6%. At the same time, Oman (+37.2%), Lebanon (+15.4%), Israel (+10.3%) and Iran (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +37.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Palestine (+39 p.p.), Lebanon (+9 p.p.) and Oman (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-34.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Palestine ($X) remains the largest exercise book supplier in the Middle East, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Palestine amounted to +21.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (+13.6% per year) and Iran (+11.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, overseas purchases of exercise books increased by 6.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exercise book imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Iraq (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) represented the largest importers of exercise books, together generating 87% of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +11.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +11.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
