In value terms, fish parts exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Yemen represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 52% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Yemen decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Jordan (+10.0%), Oman (+6.1%) and Turkey (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2022. Iran experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman, Yemen, Turkey and Jordan increased by +11, +9.5, +3 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the largest fish parts supplier in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 12% share.
In Yemen, fish parts exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-15.9% per year) and Oman (+11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, supplies from abroad of fish heads, tails and maws increased by 158% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), together comprising a 17% share of total imports. Iraq (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -19.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+52.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-2.6%) and Iraq (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bahrain (+8.2 p.p.), Oman (+7.6 p.p.) and Iraq (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -9.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish heads, tails and maws in the Middle East, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 4.6% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, fish parts imports decreased by an average annual rate of -16.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (-11.8% per year) and Iraq (-0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 138% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
