Exports in the Middle East
In 2021, approx. X tons of flours, meals and pellets of fish were exported in the Middle East; growing by 14% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +13.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 61%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Yemen represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bahrain (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4% share of total exports.
Yemen was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flours, meals and pellets of fish exports, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+23.4%) and Bahrain (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Yemen (+29 p.p.) and Oman (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in the Middle East, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 7.8% share.
In Yemen, fish meals and pellet exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+1.4% per year) and Bahrain (+18.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish
Imports in the Middle East
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish increased by 49% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Israel was the main importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish in the Middle East, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Iraq (7.7%). Oman (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish meals and pellet imports into Israel stood at +2.4%. At the same time, Bahrain (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkey (-3.3%), Oman (-3.9%), Qatar (-4.4%), the United Arab Emirates (-5.5%), Jordan (-8.1%), Iraq (-21.3%) and Saudi Arabia (-38.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Israel (+29 p.p.), Bahrain (+2 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Iraq (-33.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish in the Middle East, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 5.1% share.
In Israel, fish meals and pellet imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+4.8% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-16.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
