Turkey represented the largest exporter of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators in the Middle East, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 72% of total exports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total exports.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest fuse and detonator supplier in the Middle East, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Turkey, fuse and detonator exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+28.0% per year) and Oman (+59.2% per year).

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators, when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fuse and detonator imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (13%) and Jordan (4.5%). The following importers - Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total imports.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators. At the same time, Kuwait (+16.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) and Israel (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2021. Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Jordan (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+7.8 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+7.6 p.p.) and Kuwait (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total imports. Israel, Kuwait and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.2%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
