Garlic Market Size in the Middle East

In 2022, the Middle Eastern garlic market decreased by -3.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Garlic Production in the Middle East

In value terms, garlic production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 28%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Iran (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together comprising 89% of total production. Oman, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.8%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +21.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average garlic yield fell rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -36.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the yield increased by 125% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted notably in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area soared to X ha in 2022, picking up by 48% against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of garlic exported in the Middle East dropped rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -32.4% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 105% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Iran represented the main exporter of garlic in the Middle East, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 44% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Syrian Arab Republic (14%), the United Arab Emirates (6.6%) and Jordan (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +40.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest garlic supplying countries in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iran ($X) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X), together accounting for 74% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +52.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 22%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

Garlic imports reached X tons in 2022, increasing by 3.2% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the main importers of garlic in the Middle East, together resulting at near 57% of total imports. Yemen (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (6.5%) and Oman (6.2%). The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - each reached an 8.5% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +14.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price increased by +28.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 27%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
