In 2022, shipments abroad of glutamic acid and its salts increased by 8.3% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glutamic acid exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 166% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), creating a 28% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to glutamic acid exports from Turkey stood at +14.0%. At the same time, Israel (+20.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+24 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.8 p.p.) and Israel (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest glutamic acid supplier in the Middle East, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +14.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+7.0% per year) and Israel (+0.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
Glutamic acid imports reached X tons in 2022, with an increase of 14% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, glutamic acid imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +112.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of glutamic acid imports in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together finishing at 87% of total import. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), comprising a 6.2% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest glutamic acid importing markets in the Middle East were Saudi Arabia ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Iran, Israel and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Iran, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
