Grapefruit Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern grapefruit market was estimated at $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Grapefruit Production in the Middle East

In value terms, grapefruit production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Iran (X tons), with a combined 89% share of total production. Syrian Arab Republic and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average grapefruit yield in the Middle East fell slightly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 12%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of grapefruits in the Middle East amounted to X ha, stabilizing at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 5.6%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grapefruit production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

Grapefruit exports reduced to X tons in 2022, which is down by -6.7% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporter of grapefruits in the Middle East, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 65% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), making up a 32% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grapefruit exports from Turkey stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Lebanon (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lebanon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Israel (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit supplying countries in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and Lebanon ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +4.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, grapefruit imports in the Middle East reached X tons, growing by 1.8% against 2021. Overall, imports saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 66%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 215%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importer of grapefruits, committing 43% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Iraq (14%), Kuwait (9.6%) and Turkey (8.8%). Qatar (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of grapefruits. At the same time, Kuwait (+7.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) and Turkey (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iraq (-2.4%) and Qatar (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates increased by +4.2 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in the Middle East, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 5.3% share.

In Saudi Arabia, grapefruit imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.4% per year) and Kuwait (+10.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 189% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
