Non-Wheat Groats Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, the Middle Eastern non-wheat groats market decreased by -2.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +34.2% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat groats production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 44%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in the Middle East

Non-wheat groats exports reduced to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat groats exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 112%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), creating a 5.6% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat groats exports from Turkey stood at +10.9%. At the same time, Oman (+88.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +88.9% from 2012-2021. Iran experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkey (+15 p.p.) and Oman (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Iran (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in the Middle East, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.

In Turkey, non-wheat groats exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+67.5% per year) and Iran (+1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, supplies from abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) increased by 53% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 76%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main importer of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), committing 58% of total imports. Iraq (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Israel (9%) and Yemen (7%). Lebanon (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) imports, with a CAGR of +51.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+19.1%), Yemen (+8.9%) and Iraq (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Lebanon (-3.0%), Israel (-5.5%) and Jordan (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Saudi Arabia increased by +55 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in the Middle East, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 13% share.

In Saudi Arabia, non-wheat groats imports increased at an average annual rate of +40.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (-5.1% per year) and Iraq (-0.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
