Gummed Paper Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Middle Eastern gummed paper market, when its value increased by 2.4% to $X. In general, consumption saw a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gummed paper production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. In 2021, gummed paper exports in the Middle East reduced slightly to X tons, dropping by -1.9% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 161%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gummed paper exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Israel (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the major exporters of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) in 2021, amounting to approx. 40% and 36% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), generating a 19% share of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +38.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest gummed paper supplier in the Middle East, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 19% share.

In 2021, the amount of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) imported in the Middle East contracted to X tons, dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gummed paper imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the largest importer of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), constituting 52% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Iraq (9.5%) and Turkey (4.6%). Israel (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gummed paper imports into Saudi Arabia stood at -9.2%. At the same time, Iraq (+29.4%), Israel (+6.1%), Oman (+5.7%), Iran (+2.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkey (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+9.6 p.p.), Iraq (+9 p.p.), Israel (+2.5 p.p.), Oman (+2.2 p.p.) and Iran (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -6% and -17.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) in the Middle East, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.8% share.

In Saudi Arabia, gummed paper imports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+3.1% per year) and Turkey (-9.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
