Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, shipments abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 87%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Palestine (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together constituting a 12% share of total exports. Iran (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hairpin supplying countries in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Palestine ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Israel, Lebanon, Iran and Syrian Arab Republic, which together accounted for a further 14%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +33.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, falling by -28.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 83%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hairpin Imports

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, the amount of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers imported in the Middle East reduced notably to X tons, waning by -26.4% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total imports in 2021. Iraq (X tons) took an 8.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Iran (7.8%), Palestine (7.3%), Yemen (6.9%), Lebanon (6.2%) and Turkey (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Palestine (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hairpin importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Palestine ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports.

Palestine, with a CAGR of +15.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hairpin import price increased by +38.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
