Handmade paper imports reduced sharply to X tons in 2021, waning by -80.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, handmade paper imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Yemen (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) represented the major importer of handmade paper and paperboard in the Middle East, generating 86% of total import. Iran (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Yemen ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported handmade paper and paperboard in the Middle East, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 9.5% share.
