Hop Market Size in the Middle East
In 2022, the Middle Eastern hop market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Hop Production in the Middle East
In value terms, hop production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +67.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hop production, comprising approx. 87% of total volume. Moreover, hop production in the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), tenfold.
In the United Arab Emirates, hop production increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkey (0.0% per year) and Yemen (+1.8% per year).
Hop Exports
Exports in the Middle East
In 2022, shipments abroad of hops increased by 297% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 389%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, hop exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 2,138%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hops exports, with a CAGR of +103.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Turkey (+96 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest hop supplier in the Middle East, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +116.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 358%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+6.0%).
Hop Imports
Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of hops, when their volume increased by 2.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 40%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hop imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 51% of total imports. Iran (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Israel (17%). Iraq (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+19.2%), Oman (+6.3%), Iraq (+6.0%) and Israel (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Iran (+21 p.p.), Israel (+7.6 p.p.) and Iraq (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-25.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hops in the Middle East, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at -4.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+26.4% per year) and Israel (+11.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 18% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
