Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hydrogen chloride exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the largest exporter of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) in the Middle East, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (11%) and Iran (5.3%). Jordan (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+44.4%), Iran (+22.7%) and Turkey (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +44.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kuwait (-6.7%) and Jordan (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+21 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+5.4 p.p.) and Iran (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kuwait and Jordan saw its share reduced by -11% and -14.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest hydrogen chloride supplier in the Middle East, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 6% share.
In Saudi Arabia, hydrogen chloride exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+19.2% per year) and Iran (+15.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) increased by 8.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen chloride imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Kuwait represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together committing a 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkey (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.5% share of total imports.
Kuwait was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) imports, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+13.9%), Jordan (+6.6%), Lebanon (+6.4%), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.7%) and Israel (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kuwait (+55 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+7 p.p.), Jordan (+6.1 p.p.), Oman (+4.8 p.p.) and Israel (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kuwait ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) in the Middle East, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with an 8.3% share.
In Kuwait, hydrogen chloride imports increased at an average annual rate of +37.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (-3.8% per year) and Oman (+18.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hydrogen chloride import price increased by +93.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 78%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
