Exports in the Middle East
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of industrial fatty alcohols decreased by -58.5% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 657%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, industrial fatty alcohols exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 206%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), making up a 5.2% share of total exports.
Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial fatty alcohols exports, with a CAGR of +34.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+93 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkey (-18.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest industrial fatty alcohols supplier in the Middle East, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
In Saudi Arabia, industrial fatty alcohols exports expanded at an average annual rate of +31.6% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+1.4%).

Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of industrial fatty alcohols, when their volume increased by 27% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 51%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial fatty alcohols imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the main importer of industrial fatty alcohols in the Middle East, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkey (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Israel (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial fatty alcohols imports, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-4.8%) and Iran (-32.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+52 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-8.9 p.p.) and Iran (-45.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest industrial fatty alcohols importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 90% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
