In 2022, the Middle Eastern optical radiation instruments market decreased by -6% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -6.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 59%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -2.2% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Israel prevails in exports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Israel was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments using optical radiations exports, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%) and Turkey (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Israel (+43 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-13.4 p.p.) and Turkey (-26.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in the Middle East, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.
In Israel, optical radiation instruments exports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+9.7% per year) and Turkey (-2.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, supplies from abroad of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -7.6% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 62%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) represented the key importers of instruments using optical radiations in 2022, finishing at approx. 25% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Iraq (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X units), Iran (X units), Qatar (X units) and Oman (X units). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Iraq, Qatar, Iran and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Qatar, with a CAGR of +18.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Oman ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
