Inulin Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, the Middle Eastern inulin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -19.5% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Inulin Production in the Middle East

In value terms, inulin production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -19.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, shipments abroad of inulin decreased by -77% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 4,379%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inulin exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 719% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 72% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (12%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to inulin exports from Saudi Arabia stood at -16.9%. Turkey (-2.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+9.1 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-9.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest inulin supplier in the Middle East, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.

In Saudi Arabia, inulin exports shrank by an average annual rate of -8.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-4.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-16.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 172%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, supplies from abroad of inulin increased by 9.1% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, inulin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +101.9% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the two major importers of inulin, namely Israel and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +8.7%).

In value terms, Israel ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +9.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Israel totaled $X per ton.
