In 2021, approx. X units of laptops and palm-top computers were exported in the Middle East; with an increase of 7.8% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports totaled $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +61.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X units) and Turkey (X units), together constituting a 20% share of total exports. Israel (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laptop and tablet computer exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -3.0%. At the same time, Turkey (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012-2021. Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Israel (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+12 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+4.6 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel saw its share reduced by -2.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest laptop and tablet computer supplier in the Middle East, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 9.6% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, laptop and tablet computer exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-0.6% per year) and Turkey (+8.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, remaining constant against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, laptop and tablet computer export price increased by +67.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Imports in the Middle East

For the third year in a row, the Middle East recorded growth in overseas purchases of laptops and palm-top computers, which increased by 14% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest importer of laptops and palm-top computers in the Middle East, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. Turkey (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (13%) and Israel (6.9%). Iran (X units), Iraq (X units), Kuwait (X units), Qatar (X units), Bahrain (X units) and Jordan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laptop and tablet computer imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Jordan (+5.2%), Qatar (+4.7%) and Israel (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkey (-1.9%), Saudi Arabia (-2.3%), Bahrain (-4.3%), Kuwait (-4.5%), Iraq (-12.1%) and Iran (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Israel (+3.2 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iraq and Iran saw its share reduced by -3.9% and -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported laptops and palm-top computers in the Middle East, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 12% share.
