Leather Market Size in the Middle East
For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle Eastern leather market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Leather Production in the Middle East
In value terms, leather production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Leather Exports
Exports in the Middle East
In 2021, overseas shipments of leather were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leather exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 61% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Iraq (4.6%). The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the leather exports, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-6.7%), Iraq (-7.5%) and Iran (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -4% and -9.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest leather supplier in the Middle East, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 2.5% share.
In Turkey, leather exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-12.5% per year) and Israel (-2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Leather Imports
Imports in the Middle East
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of leather increased by 0.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 5.5% share of total imports. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Iran (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Israel (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Palestine (+3.0%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2021. Iran experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-5.7%) and Israel (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Syrian Arab Republic increased by +1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather in the Middle East, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to -5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (-3.2% per year) and Israel (-10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
